Random France facts (continued)...

11) when you eat bread here ( always a baguette- the bread with a hard covering) French people place their bread directly on the table... never on their plate.

12) I think i already mentioned this about clothing stores (prices are always posted in the windows- prob cause the stores are NEVER OPEN for you to go in and look)... but the same goes with restaurants and i really really appreciate it. There are menus outside of each restaurant so you know going in how much everything is going to cost. Not so much in Italy, though.

13) My poor high schoolers will never get to experience the glory of a graduation ceremony and walking across that stage. In France, it's very anti-climactic. One day, you're just done. That's it. No throwing of caps, no thousands of pictures. Just, come get your diploma from the unfriendly woman who works in the school's front office.

14) They have chicken flavored chips here. doesnt sound appetizing.

15) OH!! my favorite and I can't believe the US hasn't caught on to this phenomenon. But they have coffee vending machines .. in train stations mostly. I love it. Pay 1 euro, and a little plastic cup drops down and it's filled with coffee/cream goodness.

16) French translation of the new movie "The Hangover" ? Take a wild guess. You would guess something in French right? That would only make sense... but no. The translation: "A Very Bad Trip". WHAAAAATTTTTT? If it's still gonna be in English, why not just keep the original title? French are weird.

17) I've been watching a lot of "Entertainment TV".... and every other episode is either about Michael Jackson or Hugh Hefner and the Playboy Dynasty.

18) Some Christmas musts for the French?: Foie gras without a doubt (duck liver ), Chocolate covered apples are fairly popular at the markets (no candy or caramel covered), the skinniest, most poorly decorated Christmas tree you can find, AND these creepy stuffed Santas that are hung off balconies that make it look like Santa is creeping inside your house. *** On a side note, all my students open their presents on Christmas eve. Christmas day is spent playing with the presents and eating the big christmas meal.

19) Lavender in the south of France= everywhere.

20) Clementines are in season right now. I think at one point before Linda went home, we had like 20 clementines here. Our teachers would pick them from their yard and bring them to school for us.

  1. FYI If there aren't now, there used to be coffee machines that would provide you with a cup of coffee, hot cocoa, etc. I remember Daddy getting coffee that way at hospitals, etc. Don't know when it beame popular to have coffee pots at work.
Are clemenines good? They look like a cross between an orange and tangerine, but don't think I have ever had one. Should be full of Vitamin C. You are giving me another education!! Mom

  2. On number 16 you say (and I quote) "French are weird." After 7 years of educating yourself, two years of teaching, and countless hours of studying the language and country, you are just NOW coming to this conclusion? Ha...Ha...

Have a great New Year's and you/Erin will be missed at my gathering.

    Love you -
    Aaron

  3. Try the chicken flavored chips. They're actually not bad. You must try every flavor of Lay's!
